Sustainable Hosting is dead; long live Sustainable Hosting! In 2026, at the top of our twentieth year, we closed the American business entity and opened in Belgium.
Twenty years is a strange milestone for a company that has never especially wanted to be big. We started in 2006 because none of us could find a host we were willing to recommend to a friend, and the idea that hosting could be carbon-neutral was treated, at the time, as a slightly eccentric hobby. It is now a marketing category, which is progress of a sort.
Why Europe
For a business built on renewable energy, data protection and being able to substantiate what it says about itself, Europe is simply the better place to be. The energy market is further along. The privacy law is the strictest in the world, and we already worked to it well before the move. And the rules about environmental claims are tightening in a direction that suits a company which has always preferred to publish its meter readings rather than buy a logo.
What changes for you
If you are an American customer, current or new: nothing. The US mailing address is still there, operations have not moved, and the servers have not moved either. Your invoices, your control panel and the person who answers your email are all the same.
What does change is that we now have European reporting obligations to meet, so the company registration details are published on the legal page, and the footer of every page carries the registration number. Additionally, the servers are already in Germany, ensuring your data is protected, and that it never leaves Europe.
What has not changed since 2006
Carbon-neutral from the first day (now the oldest company in the world that can say that). Carbon-negative since 2021, which we can show you the electricity meter readings for. Independently owned for all time. Socially responsible. Small on purpose. And still answering our own email.
